Raffles City Chongqing

Positioned at the apex of two converging rivers, the Yangtze and Jialing, Raffles City Chongqing stands as an icon marking the gateway to the city and is one of the largest mixed-use projects in the world.

Buchan undertook retail planning and designed the interiors of the development’s retail podium. We worked in close collaboration with world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie from Boston.

The biggest challenge for the interior design and fit-out is the sheer size of the development and number of different uses. The public podium covers five levels and spans 230,000m². The key to the design for such a large floor plate is to keep customers comfortable and well-orientated. We did this by creating unique precincts. They feature atriums and landmark gallerias to capitalise on viewlines and give visitors a sense of place.

The central spine in the middle of the mall creates a boulevard. This encourages a continuous flow of energy to the peninsula and connects people to the city centre.

The 817,000m² development features world-class retail, office, residential, serviced residences as well as a five-star hotel. The precinct also boasts a connected transport hub. There are direct links to various transit connections such as the MRT and ferry terminals.
