Te Tōangaroa Stadium and Urban Neighbourhood Precinct

The Te Tōangaroa Precinct Development is an ambitious urban revitalisation project on the eastern outskirts of Auckland's CBD.

The proposed development aims to transform underutilised space into a vibrant mixed-use precinct anchored by a new state-of-the-art stadium in an area behind Spark Arena and the old Auckland Railway Station building. This area has also been referred to as Quay Park, and borders Quay Street.

Internationally renowned sports architects HKS is leading the stadium design in collaboration with global precinct architecture and design practice Buchan, local studio TOA Architects and landscape architects Boffa Miskell.

Working closely with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei and NZ Rugby, the consortium, led by Jim Doyle and Paul Nisbet of Cenfield MXD, has brought together heavyweights in the global and local sports industry to help turn this vision into a reality.

The consortium’s vision for Te Tōangaroa (Quay Park) includes a 50,000-seat, u-shaped stadium as part of the precinct, that will also feature four hotels, bars, restaurants, retail, commercial office spaces, apartments, education and health facilities and public open spaces designed to enhance the mana of the whenua.

The stadium is the centre piece of the proposed 15ha urban precinct that ties together surrounding neighbourhoods with activated public spaces.

The Te Tōangaroa stadium concept has been selected to progress to the next phase by Auckland Council. A feasibility study will now be carried out by the consortium in line with the Council’s Main Stadium selection process.

Te Tōangaroa is an area of cultural and historical significance. The consortium acknowledges the role of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei as Tangata Whenua and whose land comprises much of the site for the proposed development.

“More than a ‘downtown stadium’ that activates the eastern approach to Auckland’s CBD, the proposed design will revitalise existing industrial areas into an engaging neighbourhood precinct and destination that provides genuine activation year-round.” - Phil Schoutrop, Buchan Principal and Precincts Sector Lead.
